Chloe Lula
Raised in San Francisco and based in Berlin, DJ and producer Chloe Lula is known for her deep and atmospheric sound that pulls from the niche recesses of techno. Originally trained as a classical cellist, Chloe left the conservatory at 18 when she discovered raving and electronic music, moving to Berlin shortly thereafter to immerse herself in the city’s burgeoning techno scene. There, she was exposed to the sleek and stark minimalism of artists like Sandwell District—an early ideal for what she would later pursue in her own work—as well as avant-garde electroacoustic music. The confluence of these worlds has forged her textural approach to techno and inspired her to return to her instrument. Today, she uses the cello to write full-length ambient, electroacoustic live shows as well as deconstructed tones and timbres that help form the unique character of her releases for the dance floor.
A fresh face in the techno scene, Chloe has found her voice as a producer and increasingly uses her DJ sets as extensions of her studio practice. In the last year alone, she has released on Tresor—where is she is a resident DJ as well as Blueprint and Falling Ethics. She will also put out her debut full-length instrumental album, Oneiris, on Subtext Recordings, the vaunted experimental label run by James Ginzburg of Emptyset. As a DJ and a live performer, Chloe has been invited to play at Berghain, Boiler Room, Movement Detroit and countless clubs, festivals and parties across Asia, Europe, and North and South America. Always in pursuit of honing her craft, Chloe has become an exciting, in-demand artist who’s set apart for creating a focused, introspective musical vocabulary that is uniquely her own.
