‘Light and Time’ is out today on Dekmantel. It marks 45 years in music for Steve Rachmad, a career that runs from his earliest days experimenting with drum machines in Amsterdam, through the aliases that shaped Dutch techno (Sterac, Parallel 9, Sterac Electronics), to a body of work that’s influenced generations of producers on both sides of the Atlantic.
The album had its first physical run last week, timed to Dekmantel Festival, where Rachmad held an album signing on-site as part of the celebrations around his anniversary. Today marks the wider release.
Musically, it’s a departure from the club-built techno he’s best known for. Across the record, rhythm takes a back seat to orchestral arrangement and ambient texture, with tracks built to be sat with rather than danced to, some of them reaching back toward the electro-funk that first pulled him into electronic music as a teenager. It’s not a nostalgia piece. It’s Rachmad still working out what else this sound can do, four and a half decades in.
